Thomas Frank admits that the decision on Heung-min Son’s future will be made collectively by the club, with the South Korean now in the final year of his Tottenham contract.
The current Tottenham captain will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest legends in the club’s recent history, with the 33-year-old securing his legacy at the club by lifting the Europa League trophy in May.
Reports over the last few weeks have indicated that Tottenham will allow Son to decide if he wants to stay or leave this summer, with the Lilywhites having no intention of pushing him out the door.
Over the last few days, it has emerged that Thomas Frank is happy for Son to stay at Tottenham after the forward decided against leaving the club this summer.
Thomas Frank says Tottenham will make final decision on Heung-min Son
The Tottenham head coach has already confirmed that Son will wear the captain’s armband against Reading this afternoon.
The 51-year-old has now weighed in on the future of the experienced forward, confirming that the likes of Johan Lange and Daniel Levy will be involved in the final decision over his future.
When asked if Tottenham should let Son decide what comes next after his decade-long service to the Lilywhites, Frank told Football.London: “It’s always tricky, situations like that, if that happens. Right now, I have a player who is fully committed and training well, and will play tomorrow.
“If a player has been at a club a long time, then there will always be a decision for the club to take, of course. And of course, the head coach and the guys who are in charge and this case, will be with Daniel [Levy] and Johan [Lange].
“Because there is something in it, if someone wants to leave at a certain stage, then there can be something there. But the club will always decide in the end, of course.”
Frank is not worried about Son’s future for the time being
The Dane might want to avoid what happened to Ange Postecoglou two years ago, with Harry Kane making the switch to Bayern Munich on the eve of the Australian’s first competitive game in charge of Spurs, ironically against Frank’s Brentford side.
When asked if he wants to finalise Son’s future well before that to avoid such a disruption, the Tottenham boss responded: “Yeah. First and foremost, he’s here now. I’m not worried too much about it.
“Let’s take that five or six weeks down the line. That will probably be something I get [asked] the following week, so I’ll practice my answers. Right now, he’s here.”
