Morgan Gibbs-White’s teammates were resigned to the midfielder leaving at the start of the summer, but they expected him to go to another Premier League side, not Tottenham.
Most Spurs fans are well caught up on the unfolding Morgan Gibbs-White transfer saga, with Forest launching a legal challenge against Tottenham Hotspur for allegedly talking to the attacking midfielder without their permission.
Spurs remain confident of landing Gibbs-White despite Forest’s attempts to stop the deal, but according to reports, it is unclear how long it will take for the Gibbs-White issue to be resolved.
It was revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday that Forest were on the verge of selling Gibbs-White to Man City before Tottenham paid his release clause.
The outlet claimed that the midfielder had a change of heart and decided to greenlight a switch to Spurs, which left the Midlands club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, very angry.
Morgan Gibbs-White’s teammates expected him to join Manchester City, not Tottenham
It has now been revealed by The Daily Mail that towards the end of last season, many of the attacking midfielder’s teammates expected him to depart the club this summer.
Many of them thought that the 25-year-old would be on his way to the Etihad Stadium, and some even hoped it would happen quickly so that the noise around the former Wolves man did not become a distraction.
The Forest players were genuinely surprised that City did not follow up on their early interest and conclude a deal for the England international.
The outlet adds that there was always an expectation at the City Ground that at least one of Gibbs-White or Antony Elanga, or possibly both players, would leave the club.
Gibbs-White is still keen on a move to Spurs
The Mail suggest that the deal to take the attacking midfielder to N17 is not likely to go through for £60m after Forest’s allegation of an illegal approach by the North London side.
However, the report makes it clear that Gibbs-White has certainly not given up hope of joining Tottenham, even as he has begun pre-season training with Forest.
The publication adds that Spurs have not abandoned the deal despite the hold-up, while Forest’s stance is that they are still willing to sell their star man for the right price.
