Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have both allegedly entered the race to sign a highly-rated Liverpool star, who has been backed to exit Anfield this summer.
Tottenham are mired in a legal battle with Nottingham Forest over Morgan Gibbs-White, and it is unclear how long it will take for the issue to be resolved.
The big question is how long Spurs will wait and whether they will be tempted to turn their attention to the other attacking midfielders on their wishlist.
It was reported last month that Tottenham were one of several clubs that had enquired about Harvey Elliott, who allegedly wants to leave Liverpool in search of regular game time, and it has now been suggested that Spurs are back in for the 22-year-old.
Tottenham could battle Newcastle for Harvey Elliot
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Hotspur Way, has revealed that he has been informed that Spurs and Newcastle have now shown an interest in Elliot, with the Champions League duo joining Brighton in the race for the Liverpool star.
He backed the North Londoners and the Magpies to speak to the England Under-21 international’s representatives and test the waters with a move.
Brown told Football Insider: “There’s no shortage of interest in Harvey Elliott. Newcastle and Tottenham are the latest names I’ve heard; both of them are going to test the waters and see what it would take to bring him in. They’ll speak to his agent and find out what he’s asking for and what Liverpool are going to want.
“Both clubs will know what he can do, they’ll know the pros and the cons, and they’ll weigh those up against his price tag before making a move. Then he’s got the likes of Brighton and a few clubs in Germany having a look at him too.
“I think he could be an asset to any of those clubs because he’s a very talented player. These clubs will have been watching him with England’s Under-21s, and after seeing the way he played in that side, they’re now prepared to make a move.
“He doesn’t have much of a place at Liverpool any more, so they’re ready to let him go. It could be one that drags on until late in the window, because he’s going to have to consider all of his options before making a final decision.”
Liverpool want a big fee for Harvey Elliot
It was reported by The Athletic two weeks ago that Liverpool would accept £40m for Elliott if a buy-back clause is included in the deal.
However, should the buying club not be willing to add a buy-back clause, it was claimed that the Merseysiders would demand upwards of £50m for the midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur would thus face a tricky decision on whether to make a move for Elliot as the Gibbs-White saga rages on, and they might be forced to act if they sense that one of Newcastle or Brighton are advancing on a deal for the Liverpool man.
