assassin's creed ghost of yotei comparison

Sucker Punch Productions’ directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, have recently talked about the inescapable comparisons between the upcoming Ghost of Yotei and the recent Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2, and with AC Shadows’ launch earlier this year, it’s essentially impossible not to compare both games set in the final days of Feudal Japan.

Released by Sucker Punch in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima was a big hit, selling over 13 million units since then. The success led to the announcement of Ghost of Yotei during the PlayStation State of Play in September 2024. The upcoming sequel will be set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, and it will feature a new protagonist called Atsu.

Ghost of Yotei’s new weapons give Atsu a versatility not seen in Ghost of Tsushima, and has some lessons for Star Wars: Jedi’s Cal Kestis.

Now, Ghost of Yotei’s co-creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, were interviewed by Game Informer, talking about details of the upcoming open-world game. During the interview, they were asked what they thought of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and if they were afraid of comparisons. Connell responded that creators can either “kind of freeze up” or get excited that the medium is being expanded upon when they see similar games being released. So, they are not afraid of the comparisons, as they believe that Ubisoft “makes awesome games,” and that “it’s just fun to see so many other cool games in this space.”

Ghost of Yotei’s Directors Are Not Afraid of Comparisons to Assassin’s Creed Shadows

I think it’s just fun to see so many other cool games in this space.

Comparisons between Ghost of Yotei and Assassin’s Creed Shadows do feel inevitable, anyway, as the games have a fairly similar setting and are both high-profile AAA games. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a big hit, performing very well financially for Ubisoft, and achieving an average critic score of 81 on OpenCritic, just a bit below Ghost of Tsushima’s score of 84 in 2020. While Ghost of Yotei will be set on the island of Hokkaido in Northern Japan in 1603, AC Shadows is set in the central region of the country in 1579.

It remains to be seen how well-received Ghost of Yotei will be. Last year, the devs promised to make Ghost of Yotei’s open-world design less repetitive, as the previous game in the series was heavily criticized for lacking more “unique experiences” during exploration.

Gamers who are interested in the upcoming Ghost of Yotei have the chance to purchase a limited-time PS5 bundle. The Ghost of Yotei PS5 bundle comes with two options, one for the PS5 Pro and another for the PS5 Slim, but supplies are limited, so fans should be quick.
