The first trailer for ‘Mortal Kombat II’ (2025) has been released, and it’s everything fans have been waiting for: unbridled violence, hard-hitting punches, and… Johnny Cage!
Warner Bros. Pictures has released the highly anticipated first trailer for ‘Mortal Kombat II’ (2025), the sequel to the 2021 film that loosely adapts the plot of the popular fighting games from Midway and Netherrealm Studios. Karl Urban leads the film’s cast as the histrionic, multi-faceted Johnny Cage, and what’s shown previews brutal combat and blood by the hectoliter that has little to envy the savagery of the video games.
Fatalities, deadly fights and a lot of gore: that’s ‘Mortal Kombat II’
Judging by its first trailer, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ bets on doubling the bet on everything: more spectacular fights, a more stylized aesthetic and an extra dose of gore that will delight fans of video games. The presence of new classic fighters of the lore, such as Quan Chi or Shao Kahn, together with the evolution of the already known ones, points to a much more ambitious sequel in scale and fidelity to the original material. The most powerful warriors of the Earth Kingdom must once again defend their home by fighting to the death against the invaders.

Everything seems to indicate that the production has listened to the main criticisms of the previous film, which, while offering action reminiscent of classic martial arts films of the 80s and 90s, was accused of straying too far from the original source material. In this regard, the most notable change is the addition of Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, whose charismatic presence seems destined to completely overshadow Cole Young (Lewis Tan), the protagonist of the 2021 reboot, and who barely appears in the trailer.
The absence of Cage in the first part was one of the most controversial decisions among fans, especially because Cole was a character created specifically as the “avatar of the viewer”, a function that Johnny Cage himself has been fulfilling in video games since the 90s. His arrival is, to all intents and purposes, a rectification and a declaration of intent: the waters are returning to their course.
