The Green Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest has raised $150,000, reaching its goal to fund the planting of 50,000 trees in Timor-Leste.

Green Games’ sustainability partner WithOneSeed will plant the trees to support habitat restoration.

Hosted by games journalist Will Freeman, the Green Games Showcase highlighted titles driving environmental awareness, featuring a Q&A with UK games industry pioneer Sir Ian Livingstone CBE on the role of games in climate action.

The event included participation from over 30 studios and platforms such as Amazon Games, Roblox’s MeshMinds, Team17, and Ten Square Games.

Turning engagement to action

The Green Games Showcase proved the power of eco-focused messaging, with one studio seeing a 400% spike in wishlists, while others reported up to 50% more installs and a 75% increase in store impressions during the event.

“A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all participating studios & platforms – your creativity, green-themed activations and donations made this possible; everyone who tuned in to watch live and on-demand; and all those who have contributed via the PlanetPlay Marketplace,” said PlanetPlay in a statement.

“Together, we’ve shown that play and purpose can unite for planet-positive change. By turning engagement into action, we’re proving what the games community can achieve.”

PlanetPlay said it has more in store this summer including a spotlight on indie games, a socially-driven marketplace experience, the next phase of its Play2Act survey with the UNDP, and a new activation under the Make Green Moves initiative.

In May, PlanetPlay’s Play2Act in-game survey found that 79% of players who engaged with environmentally themed games adopted at least one positive behavioural change.

Of the 181,000 players surveyed across 189 countries, 47% reduced their environmental impact through energy use or public transport, while 34% made more sustainable consumption choices.
