Video games can be a parade of wasted worlds and long dead civilizations. Fallout and Stalker represent the best of the post-apocalypse, dead settings which come alive and feel wonderful and mysterious. The aptly-titled Misery pulls deftly from that lineage, making a world that feels haunted, dank, and lived-in. It’s a co-op game with real style and a haunted atmosphere. If you’re lucky, you can play it right now.

In Misery, you play as private military contractors, guarding a research center in the (fictional) republic of Zaslavie when nuclear conflict begins. After the dust settles, you brave the now wasted world outside the bunker searching for any way to survive. So far, this sounds like it could be any post-apocalyptic game. The first thing that sets Misery apart is its low-poly look. The game is grimy, the faces are ugly, and the world is dark and grey. Alongside the best survival games, Misery’s world feels like it could reach out and kill you anytime it wants to. Like Stalker, Misery’s zone is populated with both threatening and fascinating anomalies.

Of course, you can brave the Zone to get better weapons, resources, and materials. You can upgrade your bunker to better suit your needs. Nevertheless, the threat of the Zone waits outside your door. If you get too stressed, you can begin to see and hear things that aren’t there. If you want to stay sane, you’ll need to spend time unwinding with your fellow survivors. You can even smoke, drink, and play guitar to relax.
