TRINIDAD, Calif. — Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new gaming compact with the Indian community of the Trinidad Rancheria, allowing the tribe to continue operating its casinos in Trinidad under updated terms. The agreement ensures that tribal gaming rights remain in place through December 31, 2025.
Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the compact permits the tribe to offer slot machines, blackjack and other casino games on tribal land. This agreement builds on a long-standing relationship between the tribe and the state, with the original deal signed in 1999 and updates in 2022 and 2023.
While no new rules were added, the extension provides the tribe with more time to negotiate a full, long-term agreement without disrupting casino operations or community revenue. The compact maintains revenue-sharing terms, meaning a portion of the casino’s earnings will continue to support state public programs and infrastructure.
The agreement requires the tribe to adhere to strict regulatory guidelines, including independent audits and oversight by the California Gambling Control Commission, ensuring fair play for customers and accountability in casino operations.
The compact encourages the tribe to prioritize hiring Native Americans, local residents and individuals from surrounding communities. It also promotes training and workforce development in the gaming and hospitality industries.
The Cher-Ae Heights Casino supports dozens of local jobs and serves as a key revenue stream for the Trinidad Rancheria. With the compact now in place through next year, efforts will focus on negotiating a longer-term deal.
