It’s been many years since Donkey Kong had his last 3D adventure. It was for Nintendo 64, Rare was still behind the franchise and it was last century. It sounds extreme, but it’s not that the most famous gorilla in video games had disappeared completely, as he had other 2D adventures during these last years, besides his adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom together with Mario and his friends. But now, with the arrival of Donkey Kong Bananza that week, it has been revealed that “this was the right time to develop this game” according to producer Kenta Motokura, and thanks to Nintendo Switch 2.
Producer Kenta Motokura explains in an interview with IGN: “This game started its development cycle on Nintendo Switch 1. At that time, we were still using voxel technology and thinking about a lot of different ideas to apply. The technology he refers to is defined as a three-dimensional rendering technique that makes use of cubic units to build its digital modeling.
The reasons for releasing the game only on Nintendo Switch 2
And why did they opt for Switch 2? “When we learned that Switch 2 was in development we realized that the best implementation of these ideas and technologies would be on Nintendo Switch 2″.
Director Kazuya Takahashi stressed the importance of continuity in destruction, an aspect that is reinforced thanks to the hybrid successor. “This has allowed us to create a rich variety of materials,” as well as “large-scale” stage changes.
According to Takahashi, the developers wanted to preserve the surprise for players, who will think, ‘Can I destroy this?’ “This creates a big surprise that has an impact on them [players] and that can be done better on Switch 2″.
Donkey Kong Bananza will be released next July 17 on Nintendo Switch 2.
