Finding collectibles in video games is quite an achievement. It’s even more impressive when there are hundreds hidden in huge maps. According to Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, the upcoming Borderlands 4 will keep us entertained not only with its shooter looter gameplay, but also with 200 collectibles hidden in the most obscure corners of the planet Kairos.
A planet with multiple secrets
Through a long thread on X (formerly Twitter), Pitchford comments that the studio has been committed to both designing a huge world and filling it. But to do so, they also had to rely on new elements of mobility and transversal capabilities. “Double-jumping, grappling, dashing, gliding,” the team was “drawn to try to visit the amazing summits and see the beautiful vistas made by the incredible team of environment designers and artists,” Pitchford writes.
When we set out to make a large, seamless world in Borderlands 4, we didn’t quite know what we were getting into. We designed a massive world and we committed ourselves to filling it! Thread: 1/12

After a few challenges to get to the hard-to-reach point of these new moves, Graeme Timmons, Borderlands 4’s Creative Director, “got with some of our designers and other artists and engineers and decided that we needed something for players to find when they made their way to these remote or uninhabited areas,” generating a new idea.
“Someone on the moon of Elpis had a crate, bought from their favorite local vendor,” Pitchford divulges. “And, in the cataclysm, the crate, still full of collectibles, was hurtled towards Kairos. It broke apart and scattered the 200 or so of these things all over the place.” This collectables will be Marcus Kincaid bobbleheads, the owner of all the weapon vending machines on Pandora.
Borderlands 4 will arrive on September 12, 2025.
