Square Enix is reportedly working on a remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, with a planned release window set for late fiscal year 2026 or early 2027.

Originally launched on the first PlayStation back in 2000, Dragon Quest VII is one of the longest and most story-heavy entries in the franchise—and it looks like it’s finally getting a full modern reimagining.

This new development follows the successful launch of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which was praised for its nostalgic charm and polished visuals.

According to a report by MP1st, the information about Dragon Quest VII Remake comes from internal Square Enix documents outlining several major projects scheduled for the current and next fiscal year.

What stands out about this project is how it’s being labeled internally—not as an HD remaster, but as a remake. That distinction matters. While Square Enix has used the “HD remake” tag for previous entries like Dragon Quest III and the upcoming Dragon Quest I & II, this new entry is specifically tagged as a remake. This implies it will go far beyond a simple graphical overhaul and may involve deeper gameplay or structural changes.

This also sets it apart from the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII, which featured updated visuals and quality-of-life improvements. That version was well-received, but what’s in development now appears to be more ambitious in scope.

According to MP1st, a brief teaser was also shown, revealing the game’s logo against a cloudy sky—a minimalist clip likely created for internal use or future trailers.

It’s no secret that Square Enix is doubling down on Dragon Quest nostalgia. With Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake already out, shipping 2 million copies in less than one month, and remakes of Dragon Quest I & II in development, set for October 30, the company seems to be making a big push to bring the classic titles to new players—and bring back longtime fans.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier also added to the buzz, noting on social media that Square Enix seems intent on remaking as many Dragon Quest games as possible. However, he tempered expectations, saying not every remake would be as ambitious as something like Final Fantasy VII Remake.

I think it’s safe to say that Square wants to remake as many DQ games as possible for modern platforms. Doesn’t mean all or any of them are going to be big ambitious revamps like FFVIIR,” Schreier posted.

That said, he didn’t deny Dragon Quest VII Remake is real—he simply hinted that it may not be on the same massive scale as Square’s biggest RPG revamps.

There’s no official announcement yet from Square Enix, but based on these internal details and industry chatter, the remake of Dragon Quest VII is looking increasingly real—and potentially just a year or so away from launch. With Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake setting the bar, expectations are high, but so is the excitement.
