Only Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal tops Mohammed Kudus in this key attacking stat, with the numbers backing up Tottenham’s summer piece of transfer business.
Tottenham Hotspur fans had mixed reactions to the club signing Mohammed Kudus this week with some believing that the Ghana international will improve Spurs’ attack, while others have question marks over his price tag.
In fact, even some West Ham United supporters have tried to pour cold water on Kudus’ legacy at the London Stadium, with some believing he was not good enough. However, others feel differently, believing the Hammers could have fetched more money from the sale of the versatile winger.
Regardless, Spurs have managed to secure the services of Kudus well below his £85 million release clause, signing him for £55 million on a six-year deal.
Kudus ranks second behind Lamine Yamal in key attacking stat
Of course, Kudus is not moving from a foreign league to the Premier League, as he has spent two seasons playing in the English top flight.
His debut season was impressive, as the Ghana international managed to grab 14 goal contributions, scoring eight times and assisting a further six in the 23/24 season.
However, his previous campaign left much to be desired, as Kudus managed only five goals and three assists in 32 league appearances, a statistic that has not flattered some Spurs supporters.
Mohammed Kudus’ Premier League record at West Ham United | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Yellow cards | Red cards |
2023–24 | 33 | 8 | 6 | 6 | 0 |
2024–25 | 32 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
Nevertheless, the underlying numbers from the just-concluded 2024/25 season show just how good Kudus was in other aspects of his game.
According to stats from DataMb, only Lamine Yamal of Barcelona won more offensive duels – 291 – than Mohammed Kudus, who won 261 in the top seven leagues this season.
Kudus was also in the 95th percentile for successful dribbles, 90th percentile for accurate crosses and 80th percentile for non-penalty expected goals plus assists (npxG+xA).
Mohammed Kudus gives Tottenham edge in one vs one situations
Of course, Spurs have long been crying out for wingers who can take on their man in one vs one situations, on both wings.
Brennan Johnson, who impressed last season on the goal-scoring front, struggled in that aspect of his game, as he completed just 37.9 per cent of his dribbles.
Johnson also managed 29.7 progressive carries and completed just 46.3 per cent of his crosses last campaign. Kudus, in comparison, is a clear upgrade on the Welshman.
Percentiles | Prog carries | Dribbles cmp | NPG | npxG + xA | Assists | Key passes | Crosses cmp | Minutes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
B. Johnson 24/25 | 29.7 | 37.9 | 92.1 | 91.2 | 27.9 | 44.0 | 46.3 | 2400 |
M. Kudus 24/25 | 73.7 | 94.8 | 44.0 | 80.7 | 38.8 | 55.6 | 90.9 | 2793 |
With Thomas Frank now at the helm, the expectation is that he will only improve Kudus’ finishing even further, as we saw Bryan Mbeumo hit his highest goal-scoring tally in a Premier League season last campaign, scoring 20 goals.
Kudus will now begin work with Frank in pre-season training straight away, as Tottenham prepare for their first friendly against Reading on July 19.
