The rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake may not have a multiplayer mode, if one leaker is to be believed. Neither Microsoft nor Halo Studios has officially confirmed that a remake of the first game is in the works, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that something big is in the pipeline for the series. If that does mean fans are getting a next-gen version of Halo: Combat Evolved, this latest news could be a huge blow to an otherwise exciting announcement.
The Verge’s Tom Warren claimed that Microsoft was working on a Halo: CE remaster in June 2024. According to Warren, the company is also considering releasing the game on PlayStation 5 as part of Xbox’s recent move away from console exclusivity. That would be a big shift for one of the brand’s flagship franchises, and now a new rumor says there could be another, though less desirable, change in store for Halo.

PlayStation Store Leak Hints at Big Halo Announcement
A dataminer finds possible evidence of an impending, blockbuster Halo announcement hidden away in the PlayStation Network Store’s data files.
YouTuber and notable leaker Rebs Gaming reportedly spoke with “two sources with connections to Halo developers” about the Combat Evolved remake. Both sources reportedly say they haven’t heard anything about multiplayer, potentially suggesting that it will be campaign-only. While it may be simple by today’s standards, Halo: CE‘s multiplayer was ahead of its time and played a key part in the game popularizing shooters on consoles, so such an omission could be a controversial choice for Halo Studios. It would also mean the rumored PS5 support would be slightly limited, as there wouldn’t be any crossplay.
The Halo: Combat Evolved Remake May Be Campaign-Only
In the video, Rebs also says his sources confirm that development on the title started in 2023. This conflicts with his earlier report that the Halo remake began pre-production in 2024, although there are multiple ways to interpret the contradiction. It could mean that Rebs’ intel is unreliable, but it could just as well be something as simple as having heard misleading information at first before sources clarified the timeline later. Whatever the case, the video echoes the belief that the Halo: CE remake will release in 2026, which many had already speculated about, given that next year marks the original game’s 25th anniversary.
It’s hard to say what to expect from a possible Halo: CE remake. Microsoft reportedly has multiple projects for the series in the works, so there’s always the possibility that information is getting mixed up between them, on top of the regular uncertainty that comes with rumors and leaks. Still, Halo Studios has confirmed it will make a Halo announcement in October, so fans can look forward to that date to learn more.
