Another dispersal order rolled out across anti-social behaviour-hit district

Another dispersal order has been put into place across a district plagued by recent anti-social behaviour.

The extra measures in Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs came into force at 2pm today and last for 48 hours.

They give police extra powers, enabling them to move on anyone aged over 10 deemed to be causing a nuisance.

The measure comes after two previous orders in the district on June 20 and June 27.

There was widespread violence and anti-social behaviour between June 19 and June 22, including businesses being damaged in Broadstairs and fighting on the beach.

Residents called for more police presence along the coast, resulting in increased action.

People are being reminded to socialise responsibly or face action taken against them by officers.

The orders are being coupled with high-visibility patrols, and anyone who does not leave an area within a certain time limit when asked risks arrest.

Anyone under 18 can also expect to have alcohol confiscated from them if found to be in possession.

Chief inspector Ian Swallow, district Commander for Thanet, said: “Officers will be monitoring the situation throughout the weekend and the dispersal orders, which cover large areas including the town centres and beaches, will be renewed or introduced to other areas where necessary.

“Over the past few weeks, patrols have been out along the beaches and streets, challenging those seen behaving in a disorderly manner and disrupting anyone showing signs of aggressive behaviour.

“Harassing others or causing people to feel distressed or alarmed is not tolerated.

“With a sunny forecast predicted for Thanet, we ask that parents make sure they know where their teenagers are this weekend, and remind them that any bad behaviour will have serious repercussions.

“We have returned children home and had to speak to parents about the issues they are causing in the district, as well as the ongoing action they are liable for.

“Anyone who witnesses any anti-social behaviour taking place, is urged to report it to Kent Police by dialling 999 if a crime is ongoing or life is in danger, or by online report via the Kent Police website.”

A dispersal order is also in place for Whistable, which was launched at 3pm today and will last until Sunday.

Areas covered include the seafront, Harbour Street, and the area of the town between Tankerton and Joy Lane.

The order has been introduced into the town following reports this week of underage drinking and groups of young people using catapults to damage property and hurt wildlife.
