Tottenham fans think Spurs just made a big transfer mistake – ‘Pointless signing’

Tottenham fans have once again been left baffled by the club’s approach to player development, as the latest loan move involving Alejo Veliz has reignited criticism over the club’s strategy with young talents.

Yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the loan of Alejo Veliz to Rosario Central, following an underwhelming stint in Spain with Espanyol, where he scored four goals in 29 appearances.

Despite the disappointing spell in La Liga, Tottenham has inserted a clause in the Alejo Veliz loan deal, allowing them to recall the Argentine forward at the end of 2025.

Veliz, described as ‘prodigious’ by The Athletic during his arrival, is now set to play alongside Angel Di Maria at Rosario, after the veteran forward recently returned to his boyhood club following an illustrious European career.

Tottenham fans react to Alejo Veliz loan move

With the loan deal now official, Spurs fans have taken to social media to criticise the club’s decision to send Veliz back to Rosario Central, with many questioning the logic and direction of the club’s overall loan strategy.

One fan said: “Ridiculous! Loan him to a newcomer in the Prem or a top Championship club. Waste of time and money and squad space.”

Another added: “So buy him from Argentina. Loan him out which has done f**k all for his development. Loan back to Argentina which once again will do fuck all for his development. Likely sell for less than we paid. What a completely pointless signing like the vast majority of our young signings.”

A third commented: “Shame our bad loan decisions hindered his development. Had tonnes of potential.”

One supporter stated: “Why did you sign him in the first place when you will just be loaning him out every season? New manager in, he should have gotten a chance to be Solanke’s backup this season and sell Richarlison.”

Another added: “Shame we did not loan him to the lower levels in England to build him up. Waste of a transfer.”

A final fan chimed in: “Instead of trying to get a Championship loan or something you send him there. Bryan Gil mk2.”

Spurs risk repeating mistakes with young talents

Tottenham Hotspur have developed a reputation in recent years for poorly managed loan moves involving their younger players, with Bryan Gil being a prime example of a player whose development has stalled due to unsuitable loan destinations that failed to prepare him for the physicality of the Premier League.

The likes of Luka Vuskovic, Ashley Phillips and Jamie Donley are all involved in pre-season training, and while some may force their way into the first-team plans, others could find themselves heading out on loan.

If so, it is crucial that Daniel Levy and the recruitment team target clubs in the EFL, as they did with Will Lankshear, Josh Keeley, and Donley last season, rather than sending them abroad, where development opportunities are inconsistent.
