Sudden appearance of sinkhole sparks weeks-long town centre road closure

The sudden appearance of a sinkhole has shut a main route through a town until the end of the month.

King Street in Ramsgate was blocked off yesterday evening near the junction with Broad Street.

The void is near several businesses, including M&M Kebab House and The York Arms pub.

Pictures show chalk drawn around the crater, warning residents, and a workman examining the hole.

Kent County Council (KCC) has announced the route will be shut to vehicles until July 30.

They add that discussions are ongoing between them and Southern Water to work out who is responsible for the works.

A spokeswoman said: “Southern Water are currently inspecting their assets, and Kent County Council is waiting for their report before a decision is made on responsibility.

“Kent County Council is working closely with them to ensure any necessary action is taken as soon as possible and with minimal disruption to residents.”

A diversion is in place via Brunswick Street and Turner Street.

Drivers have been warned that the route may be difficult for HGV and articulated vehicles to negotiate.
