Nintendo has announced that it will soon stop offering its popular Nintendo Switch Game Voucher service. This program allowed Nintendo Switch Online members to buy two digital game vouchers at a discounted price. The last day to purchase new vouchers will be January 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM local time.
After this date, no new vouchers can be bought, but any vouchers purchased before the deadline will stay valid for one year from the date they were bought. They are sold in sets of two, and each voucher can be exchanged for one digital Nintendo Switch game. This lets members save money when buying two games.
Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers let players buy multiple vouchers at once for a lower price. For example, right now, you can get two vouchers for $100. You can use those vouchers to buy two games from the eligible list that normally cost $60 each, like Super Mario Party Jamboree or Mario & Luigi: Brothership, which saves you $20. These savings in cost are likely why Nintendo is taking this program down, as games will soon cost $80, which could save buyers $60 total.
You still have a while to buy vouchers if you’d like to take advantage of this deal, but there are stipulations. Vouchers can only be used for Nintendo Switch games and will not work for games on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. Once a game is redeemed with a voucher, it stays permanently linked to the Nintendo Account that redeemed it, even if the user’s Nintendo Switch Online membership ends later.
Only users with an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership (either an individual or family plan) can buy and redeem these vouchers. If a user’s membership expires before they redeem a voucher, they can still use it by renewing their membership before the voucher’s expiration date. The voucher’s expiration date does not get extended if the membership lapses.
Users can only have a limited number of active Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers at one time, with a maximum of eight. If a user already has eight vouchers, they must redeem at least two before buying another set.
If you are curious whether you still have a voucher and when it expires, there are a few ways to check. The unused vouchers and their expiration dates are listed in the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers section of the Nintendo Account page, which you can access from the console that bought the vouchers.
It’s probably a good idea to buy more vouchers if you can, because it may be an investment that ends up working. Nintendo has confirmed that new Nintendo Switch games released by Nintendo will still be added to the list of eligible voucher games even after the voucher sales end on January 30, 2026. You can also use them on pre-orders in the Nintendo eShop, but they can’t be used on games that release after your voucher’s expiration date.
So now is the time to start seriously thinking about buying more vouchers. Otherwise, you’re going to go back to paying full price for Nintendo games.
