Sales of video games, hardware and accessories inched up 1% to $4.05 billion from $4.03 billion in the previous-year period, according to new data from Circana. Year-to-date revenue is down 6% at $21.84 billion compared with $23.32 billion in 2024.
Video game sales increased 2% to $3.73 billion from $3.65 billion, driven by a 29% gain subscription spending. Hardware sales dropped 13% to $172 million from $197.7 million, while accessory revenue dropped 6% to $154 million from $163.8 million.
Top-selling game in May: Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Elden Ring: Nightrein, and is currently the No. 11 best-selling title in 2025.
Specifically, sales of Sony’s PlayStation 5 increased 3%, while Xbox spending dropped 30%, and Nintendo Switch, ahead of the Switch 2 launch saw device sales plummet 44%.
“PlayStation 5 was once again the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars, while the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black led all accessories in both measures,” analyst Mat Piscatella wrote in an online post.
