After a slight delay, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shared data on the state of the American gaming market in May.
- In May, US residents spent a total of $4.05 billion on video games, gaming hardware, and accessories. This is only 1% more than a year ago.
- The largest amount was spent on games — $3.72 billion (+2%). Next were expenses on hardware ($172 million, -13%), and then accessories ($154 million, -6%).
- Among paid games, the best-selling title in the US in May was Elden Ring Nightreign. It took first place in sales not only in the overall ranking but also in the individual rankings for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
- Mario Kart 8 led the rankings for Nintendo.
- A surge in interest in Star Wars: Battlefront II helped the shooter climb to 12th place in the overall sales ranking. It achieved fifth place in the PC games ranking.
- The PlayStation 5 once again surpassed other consoles in both unit and dollar sales. Notably, while its dollar sales increased by 3%, Xbox Series sales dropped by 30%, and the first Nintendo Switch’s sales fell by 44% ahead of the second console’s release (which occurred on June 5th).
