Both the Black SN850X and the new Black SN8100 join the frivolities

Yet more of our best SSDs list is turning up in the Amazon Prime Day sales, and these are some bigguns: the WD Black SN850X, for my money the best NVMe drive around, and the WD Black 8100, a newer model that’s just parked its svelte metal bum on the throne of PCIe 5.0 SSDs. It’s still worth weighing them up against the Samsung SSD deals from earlier, as some of the drives are a tiny bit cheaper for an equivalent capacity, but past testing in the RPS labs (my desk) has proven both these WD Blacks as superlative all-rounders.
Although most of the fatter savings apply to the SN8100, the Black SN850X has been the best in its class for years now, balancing outstandingly quick game load times with a more general read/write speed advantage over similar PCIe 4.0 models.

The Black SN8100 is pricier per gigabyte, and will need a motherboard and CPU that’s PCIe 5.0-compatible, but I just benchmarked it for the first time last week and it broke speed record after speed record. You’ll be happy with either, ultimately.
