By overcoming Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain demonstrated yet again on Saturday just why they are considered by many to be the best club side in the world, but Tottenham will be quietly pleased with the result ahead of the UEFA Super Cup clash.
PSG have now sealed passage into the final four of the Club World Cup by overcoming Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich 2-0 through goals from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele.
The Parisians saw out the win despite receiving two late red cards and have set up a tasty semifinal clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
While the Ligue 1 side’s performance showed just how big a challenge Tottenham Hotspur face in their UEFA Super Cup clash next month, the result does boost the Lilywhites’ chances of causing an upset in Udine, owing to a FIFA rule.
PSG’s progression in the Club World Cup improves Tottenham’s chances in UEFA Super Cup
As Spurs Web has previously covered a FIFA rule could mean that PSG end up being understrength against Tottenham in the Super Cup clash, which will be played in Stadio Friuli on August 13.
This is because world football’s governing body stipulates that players must be given at least three weeks off after any major tournament.
That means that even if PSG are knocked out by Real Madrid from the Club World Cup on Wednesday, their squad will only begin for pre-season just two weeks before the Super Cup clash.
Their start to pre-season will be delayed even further if they beat Madrid and make it to the Club World Cup final on Sunday, 13 July.
In contrast, some members of the Spurs squad have already begun pre-season training, meaning they will be sharper compared to their opponents, who may be undercooked for the big clash in Italy.
Spurs fans will not be happy with UEFA’s decision
Some Spurs fans may fancy their side’s chances of causing an upset and making it two trophies in a matter of months.
However, Tottenham have been handed a shocking low ticket allocation for the Super Cup clash by UEFA, which means that not many will be making the trip to Udine.
Additionally, Spurs face a tight turnaround from the Super Cup to their first league game, with Frank having just three days to prepare for the Premier League season opener against Burnley.
