Thunderstorm warning as heavy rain lashes Kent

A warning for thunderstorms has been issued as heavy rain lashes the county.

Parts of Kent have already been facing torrential downpours and concerns have been raised about driving conditions and the potential for flash flooding, with several millimetres of rain set to fall in a few hours this afternoon.

Thunder and lightning have already started sweeping across the county this afternoon.

Delays in train services and possibly damage to buildings from lightning strikes has also been highlighted.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering all of Kent between 7am and 7pm today (July 6).

The area has also been extended further south and west to cater for the potential of more widespread thunderstorms throughout.

A spokesperson said: “Thunderstorms are expected to occur during Sunday, initially in the west of the region but spreading east through the morning.

“These will bring heavy rain, lightning and some hail.

“Within the warning area, 15-25mm of rain is expected quite widely, much of this falling within two or three hours at any given place.

“Where repeated thunderstorms occur, locally higher peaks of 40-60mm are possible.”

Drivers have reported flooding on busy roads around Kent already, including the A258 between Deal and Sandwich.

People are being asked to check road conditions before driving and amending travel plans if heading on a bus or train.

The weather forecaster has urged homeowners to consider if they are at risk of flash flooding.

If so, they should consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

In case of a power cut, make sure you gather torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items in advance.

It added: “If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car).

“Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.”
