Man spared prison over Spoons rampage back in the dock

A man spared prison for going on a drunken rampage in a Wetherspoon pub committed further offences just a month later, a court had been told.

Groundworker Billy Boxall, 39, was pulled over by police in a Vauxhall Vivaro in Marshwood Close, Canterbury, on June 17 last year.

Officers discovered he was not only driving without a valid MOT but also with a licence that had been medically revoked in November 2023.

Boxall, of Vauxhall Avenue, Canterbury, admitted both offences when he appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on the one-year anniversary of the incident.

Prosecutor Lucie Fish told the court: “The police officers just came across the vehicle and followed it and then found it didn’t have a valid MOT. Checks revealed his licence had been revoked for medical reasons some time prior.”

She added the incident placed Boxall in breach of a suspended sentence imposed by Canterbury Crown Court just four weeks earlier.

“He was given six months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, in May 2024, just a month prior to this incident taking place,” she said.

That sentence was handed down after Boxall admitted affray and criminal damage following a disturbance at The Thomas Ingoldsby pub in Canterbury in August 2023 – on the day of his father’s funeral.

Boxall had lost his temper after being refused more alcohol, smashing a chair and glasses and throwing a wet floor cone that struck an innocent bystander.

He then went outside and broke a window, causing more than £500 in damage.

As part of that sentence, he was ordered to wear an alcohol abstinence monitoring tag for 100 days and barred from drinking during the Euros football tournament.

Last week’s hearing was told he is also awaiting sentencing at crown court for separate matters, including drink-driving, a public order offence, and making threats to kill via a message.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing on the motoring offences until those other cases are concluded.

Boxall is due to return to court on July 23 and was granted bail in the meantime.
