A Kent animal park was closed this morning after suffering damage overnight.
Bosses at Wildwood Kent shut the discovery park today following concerns about safety after stormy weather hit the site in the early hours.
The 40-acre attraction – based in Canterbury Road, Herne Common – is home to more than 200 species of animals including bears, wolves, arctic foxes and otters.
A statement read: “Due to storm damage sustained overnight, Wildwood Kent will be closed this morning (Sunday) while we carry out essential safety checks across the park.
“Our dedicated team is already on-site assessing and clearing affected areas, and we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to reopen later today. Please check back before travelling.
“Thank you for your understanding and patience and apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”
KentOnline has asked Wildwood Kent what damage the park has suffered.
The storm came after a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was issued this morning by the Met Office.
The weather watchdog says the warnings will remain in place until about 7pm this evening.
Wildwood was established as a visitor centre in 1999 before evolving into the Wildwood Trust – a charitable organisation – in 2002.
It is dedicated to conserving and rewilding native British species.
