‘What a shame’: Sadness as Poundland announces high street closure

A discount retail store is to shut its doors after more than 15 years in a Kent high street.

Bosses at Poundland say their branch in Canterbury city centre will close on July 23.

The store in St George’s Street filled the unit formerly occupied by Woolworths following the high street retailer’s closure in December 2008.

However, Poundland says it has been unable “to secure a long-term lease” at the site which would enable the chain to continue trading.

A spokesperson said: “Our Canterbury store is set to close on July 23.

“We recently made it clear that over time, Poundland expects to have a store network of around 650-700 stores in the UK & Ireland compared to [about] 800 today.

“While that that remains a very sizeable number of stores, we know how disappointing it is for customers when a location like Canterbury closes.

“It goes without saying that we will formally consult with colleagues at the store and that work is underway.”

Residents say they are equally as disappointed by the announcement.

Angela MacPherson said: “I am surprised at that it is really busy. What a shame.

“I always get a few bits in there.”

Lisa Hunt added: “So sad for staff. They are so lovely in there.”

Canterbury has a second Poundland store at Marshwood Close Retail Park, off Sturry Road.

It has been rumoured this branch will also close in the coming months.

However, Poundland told KentOnline more details will be provided about its future in the coming weeks.

Last Saturday, Poundland closed its store in Broadstairs while also shutting the doors in Gravesend town centre in early May.

Following its acquisition by Gordon Brothers, hundreds of jobs could be at risk across the company after the retailer announced plans to shut dozens of shops and two of its UK warehouses.

In June, Pepco Group sold the discount chain for £1 after it had been hit by a sharp downturn in trading in recent years.

Poundland said it is seeking court approval for a restructuring plan to close 68 shops and secure rent reductions on dozens more.

It said it expects to end up with between 650 and 700 stores after the overhaul.

It currently runs about 800 stores across the UK and Ireland, although stressed shops in the latter have not been affected.
