Just days after Call of Duty: WW2 became the fourth entry in the series to join Microsoft’s lucrative Xbox Game Pass subscription service, Activision has taken the shooter’s servers offline due to an “issue.” Although the publisher did not specify the reason for the sudden Call of Duty: WW2 server maintenance, many speculate that Activision is working to update the game’s anti-cheat systems, as the title is seemingly rampant with hackers.
Earlier this week, a new update to Xbox Game Pass saw the addition of another Call of Duty game. WW2, which was released in 2017 by developer Sledgehammer Games, has now become the latest entry in the series to debut on the service. It joins Black Ops 6, which was the first Call of Duty game to join Game Pass on day one, as well as 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 and its 2023 sequel, Modern Warfare 3. Rumors continue to circulate that various other classic titles are gearing up to join the service, such as Infinite Warfare, Black Ops, the original Modern Warfare, and many more. Given that Microsoft now owns Activision following its monumental acquisition in 2023, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see more of the shooters join the service later down the line.

Although fans were ecstatic to jump back into the 2017 shooter following its debut on Xbox Game Pass, PC users were left irate after discovering that Call of Duty: WW2 was overrun with hackers. Players quickly took to social media to urge others to avoid the title until Activision had addressed the issue, and it looks like the studio may have heard the feedback loud and clear. In a new post on the official CODUpdates Twitter account, the studio said that it had taken Call of Duty: WW2 offline (specifically the Microsoft Store version) while it investigates reports of an “issue.” While the statement was extremely vague, fans were quick to speculate that the issue in question is likely related to the game’s massive hacking problem.

While newer Call of Duty titles also have cheating problems that are a constant talking point in the community, WW2‘s is extremely serious. Shortly after the game’s debut on Xbox Game Pass, players began reporting that it was filled with hackers using RCE exploits. For those who might be unaware, RCE, known as remote command execution, is a serious exploit that can allow hackers to take complete control of an individual’s computer. Some were claiming that hackers were even opening inappropriate adult content on their computers.
Many fans were quick to blast Activision for not addressing the game’s hacking issue before putting it on Xbox Game Pass, and it’s still not exactly clear if the sudden server downtime is to address the problem, as the studio was incredibly vague in its statement.
WW2 was also one of the handful of classic Call of Duty games that received a mysterious update earlier this week, which many believed could be for additional security fixes. Titles such as Black Ops 2, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and many more were brought offline for an extended period of time on July 2, with some theorizing that it could be to prepare for their debut on Xbox Game Pass.
