Images sent to KentOnline show plumes of smoke coming from the popular open space area just off the B2174.

The pictures, taken by residents in Willow Road, Highfield Road and Windermere Close, show the fire moving across the town.

Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue are currently in attendance.

The latter had advised neighbours to close their windows and doors while they put out the blaze.

However, at 7.45pm they have said this is no longer the case.

A spokesperson said: “At the height of the incident, six fire engines, a bulk water carrier and utility terrain vehicle were in attendance.

“The fire is now out with crews using wildfire equipment and hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

“Three fire engines, a bulk water carrier and the tech rescue team currently remain on scene to dampen down for the next hour or so.

“Please share this information with any loved ones in the area who may be affected but do not have access to the internet.”
