A former Rockstar Games developer has claimed that Grand Theft Auto 7 will be cheaper to make than the upcoming sixth game thanks to development in AI replacing the “bulk of the work”.

Even before Rockstar Games gave us our first look at Grand Theft Auto 6, it was obvious that the studio was going to be pushing the boundaries for what a video game can be. Now that we’ve had two full trailers for the game, that’s become clearer than ever, as GTA 6 looks like a landmark moment in the industry in pretty much every way.

GTA 6’s incredible graphics and lofty aims have come at a very high price, though. Not only has the game been in some form of development since around 2018, but it’s also rumoured to have a development cost somewhere between one and two billion dollars, making it one of the most expensive video games ever made.

Rockstar could have an easier time making Grand Theft Auto 7, but you won’t like the reason why

It’s not like we’ll know for another decade, anyway

As reported by Insider Gaming, former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij (who has shared a lot of details about his time with the series in the past) recently appeared on the Kiwi Talkz podcast. During the show, Vermeij discussed the development of GTA 6, and where he sees Rockstar going in the future.

Vermeij says that he thinks the “bulk of the work” on the next big Grand Theft Auto game (or really whatever Rockstar decides to work on after GTA 6) is going to “be replaced” by AI. The former technical director says that a lot can be “rendered by AI” already, and that the technology is only going to grow in the time between now and the next game.

Overall, Vermeij thinks that GTA 7 “will be cheaper” to make than GTA 6 because of the inevitable advancements in AI. Of course, he also points out that we’ll probably have to “wait 15 years” to see if his prediction comes to pass or not, but it’s still one that he’s putting out there for Rockstar’s future.

While it’s certainly true that AI technology is undoubtedly going to become a bigger part of game development in the future (no matter how much we don’t like it), it’s currently not clear how Rockstar feels about it. The developer is known for being perfectionists, so something tells me that it’s not going to want to hand off any part of its games to technology. Here’s hoping I’m right.
