Daniel Levy makes huge offer to convince Cristian Romero to stay at Tottenham

Daniel Levy has offered Cristian Romero a bumper contract, but it may not be enough to convince the centre-back to remain at Tottenham Hotspur.

According to reports over recent days, Atletico Madrid continue to push to land Romero, with the Spurs vice-captain’s future no closer to being sorted out, with pre-season fast approaching.

Some sources, including The Telegraph, have said that Tottenham are refusing to budge on their £60m asking price on Romero, which the La Liga giants are hesitant to meet.

It was reported a couple of days ago that Spurs are prepared to make Romero their highest-paid player in order to convince him to stay, and it has now emerged that the Argentine has indeed received a contract offer.

Cristian Romero is ‘grateful’ for Tottenham’s offer but he wants to leave

Argentine journalist Fernando Czyz has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that Levy has now indeed offered a new deal to the World Cup winner, which would make him the highest earner at Spurs.

However, the reporter adds that while the 27-year-old is grateful for the offer, he has made up his mind to seek a new challenge and wants to move to the Metropolitano Stadium.

Czyz claims that so far, Atletico have put an offer of €55m (£47.4m) plus €10m (£8.6m) in bonuses on the table and the Spanish side could raise the bonus payments by a further €5m (4.3m).

The journalist states: “Before moving forward with the sale process of Cuti Romero to Atlético de Madrid, Daniel Levy – owner of Tottenham- offered him yesterday to be the highest-paid player in the squad.

“It’s not a matter of money but of professional challenges. I love Tottenham and it will always be in my heart,” was the response of a grateful ‘Cuti’ Romero.

“Now it remains for the tough guy Levy to open the door to seal the transfer of the Cordoban for 55+10, and at most, five million more could be added in bonuses.

“The market time is long, but the player is captivated by the sporting proposal of the Madrid club… The ‘Colchonero’ awaits the outcome of the negotiations and something not minor: the tax issue of the transfer.”

Cristian Romero’s future depends on Daniel Levy

The claim from Czyz has also been carried by El Desmarque, who provide additional information on the centre-back’s future.

They say that if Romero does reject Levy’s offer, that would leave the Tottenham chairman in a ‘delicate position’ as Atletico continue to push to land the 27-year-old.

The outlet concludes that the World Cup winner’s future will ultimately be decided by the Tottenham supremo, stating that ‘everything is in Levy’s hands’ at the moment.
