5 Games You Need to Play on PS5 This Weekend (July 4 – July 6)

The weekends are a time to be spent playing video games, but with the PlayStation 5 featuring a huge library of its own titles along with access to nearly the entire PS4 library and hundreds of retro PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games, it can be hard to decide what to play. PS5 gamers are truly spoiled for choice, but I can help narrow things down with some suggestions.

With it being the 4th of July weekend, I figured it would make sense to recommend games that fit the holiday theme. But the weekend would also be well-spent checking out hit new PS5 games, as well as playing some online-multiplayer titles that have exciting things going on.

PS5 Has 13 Big Games Releasing in July 2025

PlayStation 5 owners have at least thirteen notable new game releases to look forward to in July 2025

Here are five PlayStation 5 games I recommend checking out this 4th of July weekend when you’re not busy eating hotdogs and watching fireworks.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered

Since it’s 4th of July weekend, what better way to celebrate than by playing a game set during the American Revolution. In Assassin’s Creed 3, players take on the role of Connor, an assassin who finds himself swept up in the events of the Revolutionary War. Assassin’s Creed 3 lets players experience major historical events from Connor’s perspective, all the while interacting with Founding Fathers George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, and others. Assassin’s Creed 3‘s recreation of Colonial America is still a stunner all these years later, especially in the remastered version of the game that’s available to play on PlayStation 5. While Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered does not have a native PS5 port, it is still playable on the console through backward compatibility, and a fitting game to play on 4th of July weekend.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered also includes the remaster of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, which is set in the late 1700s and features the franchise’s first female protagonist.

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite may be more satirical in its approach, but there’s no denying that the game’s imagery evokes the 4th of July holiday. BioShock Infinite‘s floating city of Columbia is draped in flags and other patriotic symbols, with the Founding Fathers themselves revered as gods. Those that want to play BioShock Infinite on PlayStation 5 will want to pick up BioShock: The Collection, which improves Infinite‘s visuals to better match modern standards, and also includes the first two BioShock games. BioShock Infinite‘s mind-boggling story, engaging protagonists Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth and intense first-person shooter action make it worth playing any weekend, but it seems especially appropriate to play on the 4th of July.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

Those looking for something newer to play will definitely want to check out the hottest new PS5 game on the market, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Death Stranding 2 has dethroned Clair Obscur as the highest-rated game on the entire PlayStation Store, with its jaw-dropping graphics, wild storyline that only director Hideo Kojima could come up with, and engrossing open-world gameplay. Death Stranding 2 is a pure PS5 exclusive and an absolute must-have for those that own Sony’s latest console. It’s legitimately one of the best-looking video games ever made and a true showcase for what the PS5 is capable of. Beyond the fact that its graphics are ridiculous, Death Stranding 2 also leverages the power of the PS5 to virtually eliminate load times and provide crisp, highly-polished gameplay. I personally didn’t care for the original Death Stranding, but Death Stranding 2 is easily one of my top games of the year so far.

Red Dead Online

Compared to Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar has largely neglected Red Dead Online. The online component for the critically-acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2, also available standalone, Red Dead Online is exactly as its name implies. It lets players explore Rockstar’s massive open-world western with friends and strangers online, completing missions, getting into PvP fights, and generally doing whatever their hearts desire. In a surprise move, Rockstar Games recently released a new Red Dead Online update that has added fresh missions for players to complete in the form of Strange Tales of the West Vol. 1. These missions add pulpy science-fiction and horror elements to RDO, and since they’re labeled “Vol. 1,” one has to imagine that even more new missions are on the way. Rumor has it that Red Dead Redemption 2, and by extension Red Dead Online, will be getting a proper port to PS5, but in the meantime, it’s readily playable on the console through backward compatibility.

Rematch

After Sloclap blew gamers away with its challenging action game Sifu, few expected that the next game from the studio would be a multiplayer-focused soccer game, but that’s exactly what Rematch is. Instead of trying to be a straightforward soccer simulation game, Rematch takes a more arcadey approach to its presentation, giving players the tools to perform ludicrously athletic kicks and run down the field with a magical speed boost. Rematch is the kind of sports game that is fun even for people that don’t care for the sport. I don’t consider myself a fan of soccer and generally avoid playing games like EA Sports FC, but that hasn’t stopped me from playing Rematch nearly every night since launch. For PS5 gamers looking for something to play with their friends, Rematch is a no-brainer this 4th of July weekend and is good for endless hours of entertainment.
