Jermain Defoe reveals what Daniel Levy texted him after Tottenham Europa League win

Jermain Defoe has now revealed a private message from Daniel Levy after the historic Tottenham Europa League win in Bilbao.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will always remember that famous night in Bilbao, Spain, when they were crowned champions of Europe for the third time in the club’s history.

A toe poke from Brennan Johnson was enough for the Lilywhites against Manchester United, as Tottenham ended their 17-year wait for a major piece of silverware, a feat that brought about celebration across N17.

The Tottenham hierarchy is now determined to build on that success, with chairman Daniel Levy even stating that the club are aiming to go one better by winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

How long it takes to achieve those lofty goals remains to be seen, but with Thomas Frank now leading the club’s project, Spurs will be hoping he can deliver more silverware to north London.

Jermain Defoe reveals Daniel Levy message after Tottenham’s Europa League triumph

Speaking on Open Goal, former Tottenham Hotspur forward Jermain Defoe opened up about an exchange he had with chairman Daniel Levy following Spurs’ dramatic win in the Europa League final.

According to the ex-Tottenham man, Levy texted him after the match to express how much the victory meant to him personally and to the club as a whole.

“Do you know what it is with Daniel. People do not know Daniel. He has this sort of perception. Daniel is a proper businessman. I know people have opinions, but if you want to go into business and run a club, who would you look at? The best training ground, the best in class, the best coaches in the academy, the best stadium, he has managed to do that,” Defoe said.

“Now that Tottenham have won a trophy, it meant so much to him. I messaged him before the game and he said to me that ‘this means so much to me.’ He said ‘this means so much to me and the football club‘, and you saw some clips afterwards and you could see afterwards he was buzzing.”

Levy’s emotion is understandable but actions must follow

For a chairman who has lifted just one trophy in 24 years at the helm of Tottenham, adding another after nearly two decades without one was always going to carry significant weight.

However, the words of Daniel Levy will mean little to supporters if they are not backed up with the sort of ambition needed to strengthen this Tottenham squad and truly give them a fighting chance at competing for major honours.

So far, Spurs have yet to make any sort of statement signing this summer, and with Premier League rivals already reinforcing their squads in the transfer window, Tottenham risk being left behind in the battle for European places next season.
