The cancellations do not reportedly affect it’s Dying Light franchise with Dying Light: The Beast expected to launch later next month.
Techland, the Polish developer behind the Dying Light franchise, announced that it has cancelled two of its unannounced games during a challenging financial period for the company.
According to reports from Polish business outlet Puls Biznesu, Techland incurred losses of approximately 130 million Polish zloty (nearly $37.3 million) in 2024, a steep increase from the $25 million loss in 2023. These mounting financial losses were a key factor in canceling the ongoing development on the two unannounced projects.
One of the two cancelled projects is rumored to be an open-world fantasy action RPG that Techland announced back in 2022. The project, codenamed Project Cornerstone, included a team of former CD Projekt RED developers, director Bartosz Ochman, and narrative leads such as Arkadiusz Borowik and Karolina Stachyra.
CEO Paweł Marchewka had earlier expressed optimism about Techland’s first IP in nearly a decade. The title was said to draw inspiration from the Star Wars universe.
Techland’s last major release was 2022’s Dying Light 2: Stay Human, which proved a commercial success. The game sold five million copies within the first month of launch. Together, Dying Light 1 and 2 have reported cumulative lifetime sales of 30 million copies.
Despite these setbacks, Techland has continued support for Dying Light 2: Stay Human, implementing bug fixes and community-requested quality-of-life updates. The developer also released a free “Retouched Update” for owners of Dying Light 1 on June 26.
For now, Techland is solely focused on their next confirmed release, Dying Light: The Beast, which was initially conceived as a DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human. After two years of development, Techland restructured the project into a standalone release with a linear storyline. Dying Light: The Beast is slated for an August 22, 2025, launch for the Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and PC.
While this news comes amidst widespread challenges, including recent layoffs and project cancellations in the gaming industry, Techland remains committed to expanding the Dying Light universe.
