The iconic video game character that never got a movie adaptation: “They didn’t really take it seriously”

For any fan of video games, movies inspired or based on the titles you get to play can be either very good or a complete disaster. Over the years, we have had much more hits than misses, but during the 90s, when the boom started to explode in Hollywood, very few adaptations managed to hit the mark. And among all the existing franchises and mascots, at some point, there were plans for a movie of the most unusual character, Crash Bandicoot.

In an interview with The Game Business, Japanese executive Shuji Utsumi said that he sought to make a Crash movie in the early 90s, during his early years at Sony. However, the studios he spoke with were not interested in the idea. “When I started to get involved in the video game business, I picked up Crash Bandicoot and started asking some of the movie studios if they were interested in turning that property into a movie,” says Utsumi. “But I was treated like… ‘hey, video games is like a toy business’. They didn’t really take it seriously.”

A change that came with time

However, Utsumi manages to end on a more hopeful note. “Video games are finally getting to be the culture, and that’s moving into the movie business. That’s a big shift for the industry that I am really happy about.” For Utsumi, now president of Sega, cinema has been a great success, and how could it not be with the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy being a hit in theaters and bringing together a dream cast to give life and voice to its characters.

About a Crash Bandicoot movie, well, now it will be a task that could fall to the Xbox team, now that they own the rights to the character.
