PlayStation exec speaks frankly about PS Plus vs. Game Pass comparisons: “We’ve stayed true”

In a recent interview with Game File, Nick Maguire, PlayStation’s VP of Global Services, made it clear: Sony isn’t budging on its approach to PlayStation Plus. While Xbox Game Pass continues to offer first-party titles on day one, Sony is sticking to its guns—prioritizing premium sales and delayed subscription access.

“We’re not looking to put games in day and date”

Maguire emphasized that Sony’s strategy of adding first-party games to PS Plus 12 to 18 months after launch is “working really well across the platform”. He noted that this approach allows games to reach a wider audience once their initial sales momentum has slowed, rather than undercutting launch revenue.

“We’ve sort of stayed true to our strategy across the board,” Maguire said. “That balance for us is working really well.”

A different playbook from Xbox

While Microsoft leans heavily into Game Pass as a day-one destination for exclusives like Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Sony is taking a more traditional route. Maguire explained that PlayStation prefers to complement its catalog with a handful of day-one indie titles each year, rather than flooding the service with new blockbusters.

When asked whether live-service titles like Concord might launch day one on PS Plus, Maguire declined to commit. However, he did acknowledge that the service has become a powerful tool for introducing new players to franchises—just not necessarily at launch.
