Harry Kane earned Tottenham Hotspur their largest sum of revenue on a single player and Cristian Romero should not be far behind if he does leave the club this summer.
There is no other player in the Tottenham first-team squad who has reached the heights of Cristian Romero when it comes to accomplishments. Before he became a Europa League winner, the Argentine defender had already won the World Cup, as well as twice lifting the Copa America.
Romero is an important member of Argentina’s squad, but he has been even more influential at Tottenham. The 27-year-old’s tough defending speaks for itself, and his leadership qualities caused Ange Postecoglou to promote him to the role of vice-captain.
Therefore, reports suggesting Spurs would sell Romero for £55m were truly disturbing to hear. This particular story has since been deemed inaccurate, but it looks as though if Romero does leave, it will be for less than he is worth.
Tottenham should demand a hefty price for Cristian Romero
Romero has two years remaining on his current contract, putting Spurs at a slight disadvantage. However, they managed to sell Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for £86.4m.
Kane may be considered a more important player in the history of Tottenham than Romero, but he was 30 years old and only had a year of his contract remaining when he departed.
Romero is younger, has a longer contract and has been linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a shorter period.
Spurs paid Atalanta £42.5m for Romero and ought to be making a good profit on him after all he has accomplished since then. £55m is way too low, especially considering how expensive centre-backs are these days. Harry Maguire’s £80m move to Manchester United six years ago is a fine example.
If Romero is to leave Tottenham, he should be valued at a similar fee to what Kane and Gareth Bale were. Anything under than £70m should be out of the question and £80m should not be seen as unreasonable for a player with Romero’s capabilities.
Spurs will not easily replace Romero on and off the pitch
Whether he goes for £55m or £85m, any scenario where Tottenham sell Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid will come as disappointing news. After all, it will not be easy to find an adequate replacement.
This is especially true considering Tottenham already look to have missed out on transfer targets including Bryan Mbeumo and Eberechi Eze. How can they expect to find a player as good as Romero when they are already struggling to sign less essential players?
However, if Romero does indeed leave, it has to be for the right amount. Spurs will need the money to sign a new centre-back and the transfer fee has to reflect what Romero is worth, regardless of his contract length and whether he wants to stay or leave.
