A grandmother says she is “disgusted” after a fingernail was found inside a rattle she bought for her grandson.
Rona Davies, from Sittingbourne, bought the baby toy from Shein for £4.08 as a present for her step-daughter’s five-month-old baby.

When she received it in the post it was in a box and it was only the day after she gave it to her grandson that his mum contacted her about what was inside.
The 66-year-old said: “It’s inside the actual body of the rattle. I’ve got it back from her now.
“I want to warn other people because my concern is, if things like this are getting into a baby’s toy, then what are their standards for health and safety?
“It’s a bit unbelievable really. It’s actually a fingernail.”
At first, Rona thought it was a piece of plastic but closer inspection revealed it was the tip of a human fingernail.

When she reported it to Shein straight away, she was offered a refund and 100 Shein points, equivalent to less than £1.
Rona said: “That’s just a joke really, because that’s not the point of it.
“The point is, what are you doing to investigate this so it doesn’t happen again.”
She was shocked by the company’s “casual” reaction, stating: “It’s a major health and safety issue.”
The mum-of-one wants it to be taken seriously.
“If I’d have known it was in there I wouldn’t have given it to him in the first place.

“It would have been going straight back. But because it was boxed up, I didn’t see the whole thing.”
But when the toy started being rattled for the baby, the nail appeared.
Rona believes at the very least, gloves should be worn when making children’s toys.
“I don’t want it to happen to anyone else. I think it’s not on that they are producing these things with obviously not the same health and safety standards that we have.”
The grandmother says it has put her off buying things from the online site, despite the fact she has ordered many items from there in the past without a problem.
Shein is a global fashion and lifestyle e-retailer, which serves customers in more than 150 countries.
The company did not wish to comment when approached by KentOnline but said it would be contacting the customer again.
