Attacker had only been out of prison a week before leaving man ‘covered in blood’

The attacker of a man said to have been left “covered in blood” had only been out of prison for a week.

A court heard that Liam Jones had been released on licence on May 22 this year, only to violently assault his victim eight days later in Cornwall Gardens, Canterbury.

The 27-year-old, who lives in the same road, has now admitted a charge of wounding with intent.

Appearing at Canterbury Crown Court via prison video link on Monday (June 30), Jones was told a report was required ahead of sentencing to assess any danger he poses to the public.

It was during the short hearing that a probation officer informed Judge Simon James of Jones’s prison release, having been handed a “short” custodial sentence on April 7 this year.

Although no details of the offence which landed him behind bars were given, it was revealed that as well as being on what is known as post sentence supervision, that same day – May 22 – he had been given a 12-month community order for common assault and battery.

Jones was arrested following the incident in Cornwall Gardens which occurred at around 7am on May 30.

Firearms officers were pictured in the street after the attack.

Witnesses from a nearby Londis store in Sussex Avenue later told KentOnline of seeing the victim, reportedly in his 50s, staggering across the street with stab and slash wounds to his arms and legs.

One described him as being “covered in blood, all battered and bruised”.

Jones will be sentenced on September 19.
