Even the most modest video game is a mind-bogglingly complex creation, enough that if they’re released to critical and commercial success, it basically feels like a minor miracle.
But it goes without saying that many games unfortunately leave alarm bells ringing from early in their development, enough that they feel doomed long before they’re actually due to release.
And that’s absolutely true of these 10 upcoming video games, each of which have thrown up some serious red flags despite the undeniable hype surrounding their release.
Some of these games have simply spent way, way too long cooking, to the point that it seems like something must be fundamentally wrong with development.
Elsewhere it’s tough to trust the track records of those involved, and perhaps we’ve simply had a troubling amount of radio silence from the dev team since the game was first announced.
Whatever the reason, it truly feels like each of these games are unfortunately doomed.
It’d certainly be great to be wrong, but the smart money says these games are going to struggle to become both critical winners and commercial smash hits…
10. The Wolf Among Us 2

The Wolf Among Us 2 is the sequel to Telltale Games’ acclaimed episodic adventure game based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic book series, and seems to be a textbook case of a video game follow-up that’s just spent way too long in the oven.
The original Wolf Among Us released its five episodes in 2013 and 2014, and the sequel was initially announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 for an intended 2018 release.
However, Telltale in its original form was closed in September 2018 primarily due to financial issues, in turn causing The Wolf Among Us 2 to be cancelled.
It was ultimately resurrected, though, when Telltale was revived in 2019, yet word on the game has been frustratingly scant over the last six years.
This may be in part because the new Telltale team reconceived the game from scratch, using none of the ideas in the original pre-closure version of the game.
All the same, production has been beset by continual delays, and in September 2023 some of Telltale’s workforce was laid off.
Though Telltale confirmed that The Wolf Among Us 2 isn’t cancelled last October, between Telltale’s clear business problems and the ludicrous amount of time that’s passed since the first game, it’s easy to imagine it coming out and being largely ignored by the gaming masses.
