Town centre road shut with ‘no warning’ as buses U-turn in high street

A major town centre route has been shut for road works.

A partial closure of King Street in Maidstone is in place, with buses and cars being diverted via Wyke Manor Road.

The unexpected restriction was imposed at around noon, with Arriva and Stagecoach buses U-turning in the middle of the high street.

Nichola Martin, who was there when marshals closed the road, said she had initially thought someone had been hurt.

She said: “There are children and disabled people waiting at the stops opposite The Mall. There was no warning it would be closed.

“Buses are being told to turn back, but some are double-deckers, so they are not small.

“They can’t get to the bus station, so people will be waiting there with no buses coming.”

According to roadwork website one.network, the closure is to make way for UK Power Networks to “allow a new electric connection to be carried out” in Marsham Street, which adjoins King Street.

It is scheduled to be shut until 6pm today (July 1).

The utility company, Arriva and Stagecoach have been approached for further information.
