Tottenham could land English midfielder for just £25m this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are big fans of an England Under-21 midfielder, who is also attracting interest from across the Premier League, and a new report has shed light on the likelihood of the player leaving his club this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur raided the Championship for Archie Gray last summer, who has proven to be an astute signing. According to reports, the Lilywhites are now looking to repeat the trick this summer by securing another young midfielder from the second tier.

It first emerged a few months ago that Tottenham are eyeing a move for Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney. Some sources claimed before the opening of the transfer window that Spurs were ramping up their interest in Hackney, but the speculation subsequently died down.

The rumours re-emerged again earlier this month when The Sun claimed that Spurs were evaluating Hackney’s performances at the UEFA U21 Euros.

Hackney is expected to leave Middlesbrough this summer

Transfer market expert Graeme Bailey has now revealed that Spurs were not the only ones who have run the rule over the young midfielder, with a host of clubs from the Premier League and abroad also monitoring his situation.

The journalist claimed that he would be surprised if the 23-year-old was still at the Riverside Stadium at the start of next season, revealing that an offer of £20m-£25m would be enough to tempt Boro to sell their starlet.

Bailey told EFL Analysis: “Hayden Hackney does have a lot of interest from some teams in Europe, and in England, there are a host of clubs who have watched him; there isn’t a single Premier League club that hasn’t watched Hackney.

“He’s doing well and Middlesbrough will have a price on him. If someone comes in with £20m-£25m it’ll be very hard for Middlesbrough to turn that down. It’s pure profit.

“There is an awful lot of interest in him. Obviously, he is at the U21 Euros with England now and doing well there. Do I expect Hackney to still be at Boro come September? I’d be surprised at this point if he was still there.”

Tottenham fans might not be enthusiastic about Hayden Hackney

It has been reported that Thomas Frank is expected to be backed with big funds this summer, but we are yet to see much evidence of that so far this transfer window.

Tottenham fans want to see the club make some ambitious moves in the transfer market ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League, and they might view a move for Hackney as the club taking the cheaper option yet again.

However, Hackey will help address Tottenham’s shortage of homegrown players and we have seen with examples such as Adam Wharton that there are some gems in the Championship, who are ready to explode at the highest level.
