People living in the seaside town, particularly the Hunters Forstal area, have been experiencing problems for several hours.

But the operator says it does not expect water to return to homes until tomorrow morning.

The company says the problem is being caused by the high demand for water during the heatwave, which saw temperatures reach almost 34C today.

South East Water’s incident manager, Nick Bell said: “We’re sorry to customers in the Herne Bay area who are without water due to a site failure this afternoon.

“We’re aware of around 7,000 customers who are affected and our teams are working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible.

“We expect to have your water returned to you by tomorrow morning.

“Our teams are preparing a bottled water station in the meantime and we will share the details with you as soon as it’s safe and ready for you.

“Once again, we’re really sorry for the interruption to your supplies and we’re doing everything we can to get them back to you.”

Snap Fitness Herne Bay, whose site is in The Boulevard just off the A299, says it will be forced to close early this evening following the outage.

A statement from the gym company read: “Due to an issue with South East Water, we will be closing at 8pm tonight.

“We will not be open again until we have water. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Meanwhile, residents in Tunstall, Sittingbourne are also facing problems with water pressure.

South East Water says the issue is being caused by it needing to supply water to Kent Fire and Rescue this afternoon.

The company estimates this issue will be resolved by 10.30pm today.
